That's right! DRINK AND DRAW MAN! His secret Headquarters is in Jakk Dempsees Pub Where he works as a bartender! every month he has top secret wacky adventures with his drawing friends!

Whoa! What a Concept! Gee....

It gets better! Every month Drink and Draw man meets with all his drink and draw friends in his Headquarters at Jakk Dempsee's Pub to have wacky drawing adventures!

Wow! you've got a storyline, and EVERYTHING! Im impressed!
...Sob.... Gee... Sure wish I had my OWN Action Figure! ...Sniff...

Also, his name is CAPTAIN Drink and Draw man, as opposed to just plain old Drink and Draw Man! My character owns the Jakk Demspsee bar, and periodically has top secret Superhero meetings there with his Super Hero drawing friends! Its even a different plotline!

Er...heh... Anyone out there got a..... SPATULA?

Once upon a Time in New York City, There was a group of comic artists who loved to draw and liked to drink , so Drink and Draw was born. One member created a group where members got together once a month to drink and draw, and draw and drink. this went on for ten years.... one day another comic book creator type person decided he wanted to create another goup that drank and drew and drew and drank. And had his meeting following a major comic book convention in NYC.

Both groups basically had the same goal, namely to bring a diverse group of NYC Comic creators, writers, and fanboys under one roof to network, collaborate, communicate, and create.

One Party feels another is being unfair in creating his group, which is a similar group, doing a similar thing , under the same roof, on a different day... The other party disagrees.

And here i am in the middle. I admire what both groups have done, and are trying to do. For myself, as a sequential artist, writer and creator, all I want to do is create comics, align myself with a group that can assist me in achieving my artistic aspirations, and having a good time drawing. I dont drink. That Alcohol, anyway. I also as an editorial artist, know a good story when I see one, and wanted to document THIS one, not to "choose sides" Point fingers, or place blame, but to tell a story, graphically because this is a part, howbeit small, of comic history, and history needs to be commented on. If any disagree with the stance I have taken or the approach, you are free to disagree,but at least, appreciate the art. For me, this is what it is all about.

LOVE this interview by Ralph. It's a wake up call to action to anyone who SERIOUSLY wants or SAYS they want to be a creator. Comic artist, animator or whatever. I dont like EVERYTHING Ralph Does or did, in fact I find some of his work, particularly in Coonskin quite disturbing, and being a Black Man I suppose I would. But even with that criticism I respect very highly what he accomplished with SO LITTLE and in the face of impossible odds. Disney WAS THE POWER in those days Ralph animated and HE took them ON and WON totally on his own terms, drawing and writing stories HE cared about. As a creator I respect that. This Editorial toon focuses on a local issue in Far Rockways' shopping area on Beach 116th street. Two major properties have been acquired by a Mr. Duckman, who has plans to convert the buildings on 116 and 114 streets into either low income section eight housing facilities, halfway houses, or centers for recovering substance abusers. The 116th street area is the major hub for buses and trains in and out of the Far Rockaway area, a major shopping area, as well as an "entry way" into the beach area. Opponents of Duckman's plans feel that once implemented, there will be an increase of drug addicts, vagrants, and other displaced people in the area which will make things uncomfortable for visitors and residents. Local residents are already seeing a steady increase of such individuals in the area and fear that property values as well as public safety will be at risk once these facilities are built.

Senator Malcolm Smith has been the subject of numerous Editorials Ive done for The Wave In the Past few weeks. In this episode, He's pictured here with Con Greg Meeks. Sen Smith is drawn here "milking" their Non Profit Cash Cow, "The New Direction Developement Corporation" I got this illo in just under deadline, because I had an difficult time drawing a believable looking cow! LOL! this is just another case of why it is SO important as an illustrator to be able to, quote, "DRAW ANYTHING". In a recent discussion with Fellow artist, Andere Jardine, he mentioned how if you asked the average artist to draw a "superhero action scene" they'd be able to draw it with ease, yet would be scratching their heads trying to render a man tying his shoes, or putting on his jacket. It's SO important to learn how to draw the "ordinary" and mundane things in life.

All In The Political Family
It seems clear to us that the dual investigations centering on two of our local politicians, State Senator Malcolm Smith and Representative Gregory Meeks points out once again that non-profits should not be run by and for the benefit of politicians and their families. Take, for ex-ample, New Direction Local Development Corpo-ration. Founded in 2001 by the initiatives of Meeks and Smith, state papers show that Smith’s wife, Michelle, was a founding board member. Also on the initial board, papers show, was Cathy Green, the wife of Darryl Green, Smith’s former business partner. Green was convicted in 1999 of stealing $500,000 from city agencies and private firms that hired him as a consultant on affirmative action hiring practices. He was also a partner, along with former Congressman Floyd Flake, in the Aqueduct Enter-tainment Group, which was just awarded a $300 million “Racino” deal at the aging racetrack in Ozone Park. Flake, you will remember, was the political mentor of both Smith and Meeks. Records show that between 2001 and 2006 Smith helped funnel at least $56,000 to the char-ity through state earmarks. The largest chunk of money came to New Direction at the behest of Smith, $250,000 from the devel-oper of a cargo facility across Rockaway Turnpike from JFK Air-port. The deal to trade the right to build the facility in return for community development money was brokered by Smith, Meeks and City Councilman James Sanders Jr. Edwin Reed, who is listed as the treasurer of New Direction is also the head of the development arm of Flake’s church, the Greater Allen AME Church in Jamaica. Flake has become the power behind the scenes in Queens Democratic circles. His development group was recently given the keys to Aqueduct Racetrack to run a gambling Racino there. A week before Flake’s group got the nod, the min-ister was talking up Andrew Cuomo for governor. Shortly after the deal was made, Flake visited the governor in Albany and then declared that his mind was not made up and that he might back Paterson for a full term. Under the New Direction um-brella, Smith and Meeks started a charity for Katrina victims who had come to New York city. It collected some $30,000. It paid out less than $2,000. Now, federal investigators are looking for the missing money. They are also looking into New Direction and the connection between Meeks and Smith and the Aqueduct deal. Some non-profits that deserve a closer look are also closer to home. You’ll remember Democratic District Leader Geraldine Chapey’s Trinity Seniors organization. She ran a single van, providing rides for seniors to luncheons and events. For that, she took in more than $1.5 million in public money over a ten year period, both from city agencies and from local politicians who provided her with earmarked funds. Allow politicians to run their own non-profits, or to turn them over to family and cronies only provides the possibil-ity of corruption, and the practice should be stopped now.

IM OFTEN ASKED THIS QUESTION, AND CHUCKLE AT THE ANSWER, BECAUSE ITS REALLY QUITE SIMPLE. EVERY PERSON ON THE PLANET IS LITERALLY A WALKING BOOK, FILLED WITH BILLIONS OF STORIES THAT KEEP GETTING ADDED TO EVERYDAY! ALL THE MATERIAL ANY ARTIST NEEDS TO CONSTRUCT A COMIC STORY IS NOT TO BE FOUND "OUT THERE" IN SPACE, BUT "IN HERE" BETWEEN THEIR TWO EARS. WHENEVER I NEED A STORY FOR ONE OF MY COMICS, I ALWAY GO INSIDE FIRST FOR INSPIRATION....

USING A SHARP CLEAN KNIFE I CUT OPEN OFF THE TOP OF MY CRANIUM AND CAREFUL TAKE THE BRAIN OUT AND START SEARCHING MY MIND FOR DATA. THERE ARE BILLIONS OF STORIES, OBSERVATIONS, AND IMPRESSIONS BURIED DEEP IN MY CONCIOUSNESS THAT I JUST HAVE TO BE PATIENT ENOUGH TO ACESS. OF COURSE SOMETIMES PANIC SETS IN AND I DONT QUITE REMEMBER WHERE I PUT ALL MY STORIES. ONCE YOU GET TO THIS STAGE, CONTINUE SEARCHING, BUT BE CAREFUL TO NOTE WHERE YOU'VE PUT ALL YOUR GRAY MATTER, AFTER ALL, YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR PUTTING IT ALL BACK!

IN ORDER FOR MY WORK TO "RING TRUE" I MUST HAVE A STRONG EMOTIONAL CONNECTION WITH IT. EMOTIONAL CONNECTIONS COME FROM DEEP INSIDE BASED ON HOW I FEEL ABOUT CURRENT EVENTS, PAST HURTS, REACTIONS TO FILMS OR SONGS, AND ESPECIALLY CHILDHOOD AND YOUTHFUL MEMORIES. iT'S ALL THERE INSIDE. ONCE i HAVE A STRONG EMOTIONAL CONNECTION TO MY WORK, i KNOW THAT THE AUDIENCE WILL FEEL IT TOO AND NOT JUST BE LOOKING AT :"PRETTY PICTURES" mOST ARTISTS KNOW HOW TO DRAW A PRETTY PICTURE, BUT THE TRICK IS TO WRITE A "PRETTY STORY" WHICH IS WHY SO MANY ARTISTS WHOSE WORK LOOKS LIKE A TEN YEAR OLD CAN BE MORE ENTERTAINING THAN AN ARTIST WHO DRAWS EVERYTHING"PERFECT".

ANOTHER METHOD I USE IS TO JUST GET OUT A REAM OF PAPER AND START 'STREAM OF CONCIOUSNESS DRAWING" sOMETIMES THE OLD IDEA ENGINE NEEDS TO BE WARMED UP, SO I JUST DRAW ANYTHING! ONE DRAWING FLOWING INTO THE NEXT, FORMING ASSOCIATIONS AND VISUAL CONNECTIONS.... SOMETIMES FRUSTRATIONS SET IN AND I START TO LET OUT PRIMAL SCREAMS OF FRUSTRATION ESPECIALLY AROUND DEADLINE TIME.....

WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, SOMETIMES IT'S JUST BEST TO CLEAR YOUR HEAD AND GO OUTSIDE FOR A WALK. A SIMPLE CHANGE OF SCENERY CAN SOMETIMES HELP SPARK YOUR IDEA ENGINE. FOR ALL YOU KNOW, THE NEXT BIG IDEA CAN COME TO YOU UNEXPECTEDLY OUTTA "NO WHERE!...'

Ever notice that what the things you SAY concerning/about yourself usually come true? Think about those times in your life when you've said, " I cant do that" or " Im too old," "Im tired" "I'll never be able to afford that!" " I'm stupid..." the list goes on and on..... If we're honest, the WORDS that we SPEAK are not just "harmless meaning less things" which pop and disappear like soap bubbles. Words have POWER! Power to transform, uplift, and heal, or consequently, to teardownk, or distroy.The Bible says ... whether you believe it or not... God created the heavens and the earth and everything in between by speaking it into existence. Since he made US, he put some powerful stuff in US too!
I was listening to a broadcast on Christian TV one day and the host was speaking on this very subject:

Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth

He then exclaimed, " I WISH I HAD A CARTOON SHOWING SOMEONE BEING HANGED BY THEIR TONGUE!!!
I immediately got to work on the cartoon, confident that I was the ONLY one who thought of the great idea to send it to this broadcaater!

Weeks later I got a very nice rejection letter, thanking me for the toon, but informing me that it would not be used, just like the many hundreds of others who got the same idea to send a cartoon in! LOL!

It's STILL a great cartoon, and still a truism.

Law enforcement is upset about this, but felons seem to have no problem with the law..... Ive been noticing of late with my drawing style how I inadvertently end up paying tribute visually to one of my early artistic references, Robert Crumb.

Anyone who lives in the Rockaway Park is familiar with the HORRIFIC parking problems in the area. This cartoon accompanies an editorial that offers a solution to the problem.

The other cartoon calls attention to the legal loophole inadvertently created by congressmen Meeks, and Weiner, that allows firearms to be sold to anyone willing to cross state lines to PA, Florida, Ohio, North and South Carolina to attend a gun show. In these states, only "antique weapons" as supposed to be sold and displayed, but that is often not the case. Many of the firearms in the Rockaways are linked to weapons purchased in these states.
In a recent New York Magazine interview, Congressman Weiner, featured here, commented that although he comes under criticism with the paper, nevertheless, he is a faithful reader. I recently sent him a large resolution version of the cartoon which he happily accepted.

The First Toon accompanies an editorial on the re writing of the constitution. I used a modern spin on Old George and Ben Franklin... personally, I think Frankie was "the geek of his day" and that ole George, a military man of action, probably didnt like him, the feeling being mutual on Ben's part. The second toon accompanied an editorial calling for a clean sweep of the current "career politicians" that service The Rockaway Community. The article called for a clean sweep of the old party members, to bring in the new. The final editorial calls attention to a newly created group of homeless people who will soon be populating The Rockaway area due to the closing, or "renovation" of the SRO's That previously housed them. Beware Of Dishonest Debt Col-lectors
New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is on a mission. Just two weeks ago, he sued 35 law firms and two debt collecting firms that operate in the state in order to throw out more than 100,000 default judgments improp-erly obtained against state citizens. Here’s the way the scam works. One day you open your mail, and you get a debt collection letter from a firm you have never heard of about a debt that you never incurred. One recent letter that has hit Rockaway homes purports to come from a company collecting for Veri-zon that seeks to collect a few hundred dollars that you owe on a phone num-ber you never had. Two or three weeks later, the telephone calls begin. When you explain that you don’t owe the debt, the person on the other end of the phone says that you do, and offers you a “deal” to pay off for half the amount owed. The letters and calls continue, and eventually the person on the other end of the phone says that the agency is going to court against you, and it does. The problem is, agents of the company certify to the court that you have been served with a subpoena to appear in court on a certain day, when in fact you have not. When you do not show up on the appointed day, the agency gets a judgment against you. That judgment is then sent to your bank, and your account is seized, even if it contains monies from social security and pensions, something that is not allowed under the law. The banks find it easer to simply obey the court order than to check where the money in the account comes from. Now, however, Cuomo wants all of those default judgments overturned, something for which we should all applaud him. As a consumer, you have cer-tain rights. You have the right to ask the caller proof that you owe the debt, but it must be done in writing. You have the right to see credit card receipts and other documentary proof that you owe the debt. And, should your bank account be seized, you have the right to appeal that with the clerk of the court, arguing that you were never served with the subpoena. Don’t take the debt collectors lightly. Many of them are crooks, out to take away your hard-earned money.

Been doing a LOT of in house freelance jobs lately, and after one particualrly "killer job" I decided to make a comic about it, as best i remember it

First thing I recieved was the deposit check and samples. The client overnighted it as promised, and I was confident they had followed my instructions to the letter. This was a massive twenty person caricature for a company poster and I emphasized that I needed good samples. To my horrow when i got into the studio i found these teeney weeney almost postage stamp sized pictures that were blurry and washed out looking. I thought my eyes were gonna roll outta my sockets to make them out. My Client had also given me a killer deadline. I called my client in desperation pleading for better pics, and also an extension if I was doomed to work with these. their answer was concise and immediate. I immediately got myself a pot of coffee on and went into automatic pilot, sketching erasing redrawing, ripping pages up, throwing them all over the studio..... Finally in the wee hours of the morning I managed to scan everything, photoshop held together and I scanned everything over.

The client loved them.

I recently fell down two flights of stairs in my house while wearing my slippers, and since they CAUSED the fall, now I TRUELY know why thy're called "SLIPPERS!" LOL! Im bravely laughing through my pain here, and as I was home healing I came up with a bunch of comic strips featring me and my constant companion, my dog Butchie here. Enjoy. Hope you folks are enjoying the comics. I'm still healing from my "humpty dumpty" fall down my stairs, and as a result havent gotten the chance to ride the trains and clown commuters. My pit bull Butchie, STILL needs to be walked, however, and since I'm cursed with this creative, capitalistic mind, I couldnt help but think of a way that i could some how turn a profit with my dog..... As i was picking up his poop, this idea came to me, and i ran to my drawing board..... stay tuned for continuing comics in this PUPPY POOP PIMP series....

2nd installment in the series. I once read that if you're going to make your own comics, it's best to write/draw first about the things that you know. My dog, Butchie, is ten years old, and like most "senior citizens" his stomache is kinda delicate. Every week I have to boil chicken, sweet potatoes, and rice, mix it in a giant bowl, and bag meal portions for the week. If I dont do this and feed him regular dog food instead, he WILL throw up all over the floor , and have the runs for days. He really DOES love chicken gravey too. Stay tuned for the next cartoon.

For those of you who are wondering, dont worrry, Im coming to a climax to this story and i'll be right back doing the caricatures you all know and love. As always, there's an element of reality in these strips, not that I work part time as a pimp, but I've been a fan of 1870's media, growing up watching Superfly, "Goldie" Huggy Bear,from Starsky and Hutch, and Rooster from Baretta. Loved the outlandish costmes the players wore, and for you youngin's out there, YES, they really DID dress like this! LOL!
My Dog, actually DOES lay down with his feet in this strange position. At first I thought he had broken his legs, but soon realized that he just had crazy flexability and liked laying donw like this from time to time. He also likes to sleep on his rug in the living room with his bowl right next to him.

I've got this squirrel who lives in the tree infront of my house, owns property in the back of the house, and also has carved out a space for himself and his FAMILY on the roof of my house! The squirrel "came with " the house, so i guess he feels he has "squatters rights" or something like that. I imagined if the little pest could talk, he'd probably would be an attorney. He'd probably try to stick it to me also, since he cant get into my garbage can like he can my neighbors.

copyright infringement and creator's rights is something I, and every other artist takes very seriously. Although so called creative people may SEEM like they make great works of art easily, it really DOES take hard work. Even these few panels for this cartoon series took a couple of months of planning out and mulling over in my head. Artists deserve to be compensated for their work, even if it seems to be "crap" or "poop". You shouldnt be profiting from my poop without my consent. Lifting and profiting off of another artists' work is something that happens on the internet all the time, unfortunately. All you do is copy and paste, and it's "yours" I recall one friend who was furious when he saw HIS cartoon silk screened on a strangers' tee shirt while shopping in the supermarket! If that wasnt bad enough, the guilty party even erased HIS name, and wrote in his own! That artist,cartoonist, Oliver Gaspritz, was an editor I worked with at The Canarsie Courier Newspaper Years ago. Tom Richmond, on his blogsite, has some excellent idiot proof articles on this, that are worth reading about.

There comes a point in every negotiation involving males where words can no longer adequately carry the message you want to express.... nothin like a little primal physical persuasion to ensure that everyone's on the same page. In the old days a man would even respect you more if you knocked him "upside his head" especially if he knew he had it comin..
It's been my experience also, that so called "Alpha Males" have a tendency to take so called"brainiac guys" for granted, thinking they cant possibly "ring your bell" if the situation arises.
As for the punch in the eye, it's always been a fight ender for me.....

You cant miss doing a cartoon with a dog in it. I created this series initially as a mode of theraphy for myself when I was homebound with a severe back injury. I did a series of "Butchie and me" comix starring me and my pit bull, Butchie. I had made a "Butchie ProtoType" years earlier, but never got around to doing anything with it, until I got laid up.

While drawing and engaging a group of artists inside Barnes and Noble in Union Square, I caught the attention of the CEO's of Rocketshark Ringtones. They were so impressed with my verbal presentation and the subway drawings in my sketchbook, that they hired me on the spot to do a year long series of character designs for their company, Rocketshark Ringtones. One of their main characters, CFlashwood, was a Clint Eastwood-esque Phone who had numerous ringtones in his cloak, and who could literally blow away the competition. I really had a blast creating characters for thiese guys, the majority of them were lifted directly from my sketchbook itself, and modified to fit their needs.

American Tract Society Comic "Get With the Program"

This comic holds a very special place in my heart because it was my very first freelance job. A California Pastor had written the text for a tract that he wanted to use that would speak to the youth in his community. At the time, The American Tract Society was looking for an African American artist whose artistic style would add just the right amount of flavor. It seeems that God had me submit some samples to ATS at just that moment. I was thrilled since I'd been a fan of the comic art of Chick Publications for years and wanted to do something similar. I look back on the job now and smile. I used crayola markers and typing paper to do my layouts for this, and was paid a pretty decent price for a first time freelancer. It was a great encouragement.

Wasabi Kikaku Japan Animatic for Continental Airlines Silver Elite Program

This series of storyboards were used in animatics for JTB Travel Japan and Continental Airlines to showcase their Silver Elite Program for frequent flyers. I was so excited about this job because the animatic was shown on Japanese Television, I was given a copy of the DVD , paid handsomely, AND given a round trip ticket to travel to Japan that year. Sadly, I wasnt able to make the trip!!

"The Adventures of "ACTION PAT" Storyboards for Screen Arts Animation Studios

"Action Pat" is a character my classmates and I concieved while studying 2D Animation at Screen Arts Animation Studios in NYC on Orchard street under the instruction of Mark Stansbury. Our Project was to come up with a character, a simple plotline, board it out and animate it. It was my job to do the character design and the initial boards which are presented here. Mark assigned each student a portion to animate and our combined efforts were to be displayed at the final incorporating it into the overall film. My particular section involved Pat Spinning into the tornado and coming out of it with the cape wrapping around her body.

The Character, "Action Pat" is based on Pat, one of the students at the school, who had her hair in the style illustrated in the cartoon. I made the character as simple as possible so we all would be able to animate our particular section without too much difficulty.

PLOT:
Action Pat is a preteen girl who likes to dream. She has a very strong domineering mother who burdens her with chores and always keeps her from doing what she wants to do. (in the case of this cartoon, it's to attend a concert she has tickets for) Whenever Pat cannot get her way, she transforms into her Superhero Alter Ego, "Action Pat". Whenever Action Pat appears on the scene , instead of solving the problem, she somehow ends up making things worse and creating another problem! Me and my fellow students envisioned that it would be difficult to determine whether Action Pat's exploits were actually happening in "real time" or if they were imagined.

The Studio closed up shop after six months, NYC rents being what they are and we unfortunately did not recieve a copy of the completed film, but Since I have the original drawings I still plan at some point to animate it.

Mark Stansbury, a "purist" insisted we make this film the traditional way and NOT use Flash at all! His intention was for us to learn the process of animation the hard way, and once learned, our Flash animation, should we choose to use, it would be more powerful.

Incidently, Action Pat's Mom, is based on Mark Stansbury. Hence, the goatee.

Party Gig "Do's and Dont's" Comic For Exaggerated Features magazine

These wordless single panel comics were drawn to enhance an article I'd written for Exaggerated Features magazine, entitled, Gig Do's and Dont's. These were my set of rules for party caricature success and were geared towards beginning artists entering the live party drawing field.

Rule One DONT BE LATE It Looks bad embarasses your host/hostess and guarantees you will not get a referral, a tip, and even a cut in pay. Nothing spells unprofessional more than lateness. It shows that you are a rookie, and people dont hire rookies, they hire professionals.

Rule Two Seperate Couples: I seperate couples because they have a tendency to "love all over each other" too much and spoil the drawing angle. While I am still able to get a decent likeness if a couple moves, for a beginning caricature artist, it's best if the subject remains relatively still until he/she gains experience and confidence.

Rule Three Show the Paper whose Boss , In other words dont be afraid or hesitant about putting your mark on paper. It cuts down on speed, and causes you to second guess yourself too much.

Rule Four: Have FUN! you're a party artist! you CAN enjoy yourself! If you think of it too much as "a job" that stiffness will show up in your work.

Larger Than Life "Virtually Reality Episode" Comic/storyboard

This particular larger than life episode was my personal favorite. in this Episode, Boye and Seven are sucked into "Miss G", Seven's talking laptop. While inside the vitual world, they must solve the mystery of why Miss G is sick, and make a startling discovery. I had total creative control of the storyline and content and had an opportunity to really experiment. Since they were trapped inside a virtual world I didnt have to restrain myself with drawing conventional backgrounds, and anatomy. I felt to do so would take away from the whole "virtual" Experience. I got some great visuals done on this segment, but it proved to be the last episode, as Nathan went on to concentrate on other projects.
The "Big Apple" they eventually meetis "miss G's " Brain, named "Apple" of course.

The Cast for Larger than Life: Seven the star of the series whose character is loosly based on Nathan Seven Soctt. Seven is a High School Music VJ who works for Big Daddy's Internet Music Show Seven is opinionated, ambitious, and is willing to do anything to succeed, including put up with Gurl's unwanted advances, because he needs to work for her father's company. Seven also has a relationship with his laptop computer, "G" who unknown to everyone else, is really alive.

Gurl, is a cheerleader at the same high school Seven attends, and has a crush on him much to Seven's annoyance. Gurl rich daughter of Big Daddy. Her character is outgoing, kindhearted, and a little dizzy.

Big Daddy is the filthy rich owner of the music station, who is very driven, money hungry, and also a closet racist. He resents the fact that he has to employ Seven, but jkust cant say goodbye to the money and ratings that Seven's show brings in.

Boye is a Hip Hop Japanese Whiz kid who has an African American Soul

Doing this series was again, one of my most enjoyable projects. I was sorry to see it end, as the characters were fun to do , and we were still in the formative stages of the project when it came to an end, but oh well, that's the world of freelancing for you.

During the time this cartoon was concieved, Music Pop star, Brittany Spears was exhibiting some truely bizarre behavior that began with her cutting off all of her hair. Since The character of Seven was a Music Video Show host, we decided that he would interview Brittany and find out why she had cut her hair. The story starts off with the producer of the show wondering what he could do to boost ratings. His daughter suggests he hire Seven to bring attract the hip hop youth market, and promises that they will have a surprise special guest. Seven and "gurl" (that's the character's name by the way) discuss the possibilities over lunch, and gurl suggests Brittany Spears who she knows personally. On the date of the show, Brittany explains to Seven that she cut her hair in order to be in character for a Kung Fu Flick she was in with Jet Li called Shaolin Kung Fu Ninja Bimbos. Seven asks for a demonstration, and gets one firsthand, or "first foot'. Gurl's father, who is also a racist, congratulates Seven on his hilarious performance, pays him, and encourages him to do a similar show.

I know Ive said a mouthful but wanted this all to make sense.

This was one of my favorite projects that I collaborated with a writer known as Nathan "Seven" Scott, who had me draw a series of webcomics for his strip, "larger than life" Seven gave me a loose script on these projects and pretty much let my imagination run wild for how I would interpret. Our partnership was an artist's dream, and I illustrated the episodes much like an animator and storyboarder would, anticipating that he would one day want to animate it in flash. In this episode, Seven's talking laptop, "Miss G", his talking computer, who has a nasty computer virus. Seven is forced to call on the help of "BOYE' the local Japanese/Hip Hop Computer geek.

The creation of "Betrayal" was a friendly dare by another comic creator, Andre Jardine, who challenged me to create a short comic that told a story, and had a surprise ending. My solution was to do a love story with a twist. Initially I didnt think my solution was all that original, but everyone I showed it to claims they never expected the ending, which means that the comic was a success. This was a real encouragement to me so I decided to draw some more.
